PROFILE

Vijay Menon has been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire since 1987. He undertook his basic medical training at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. He worked in Aberdeen and in Chelmsford, Essex before undertaking registrar / senior registrar training in the West Midlands. He trained at the Women’s Hospital and Maternity Hospital and Dudley Road Hospital (now City Hospital) in Birmingham and at the University Hospital in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

During his training both as registrar and senior registrar (appointed 1983) he gained considerable experience in Birmingham in the fields of gynaecological surgery including cancer surgery, colposcopy, infertility and gynaecological endocrinology. He gained further surgical experience in Stoke on Trent where he was a Senior Registrar for 2 years. He obtained the MRCOG in 1980. He was awarded the MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree in 1981 by the University of Birmingham for his research in gynaecological endocrinology on Disorders of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Ovarian axis in women. This was done under the guidance of Prof Wilfred Butt. In 1994 he was awarded the FRCOG by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

He was appointed Consultant at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in 1987. This has always been a very busy unit with about 6000 deliveries per annum. His clinical responsibilities include general gynaecology, infertility, hormonal problems, complex benign gynaecology and gynaecological oncology. He is one of 3 consultants offering colposcopy and treatment for abnormal smears. His surgical speciality includes hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, hysterectomy (abdominal, vaginal and laparoscopic assisted), vaginal repairs for prolapse and various types of laparoscopic surgery and labial and vaginal plastic operations.

He was the Lead Clinician for Gynaecological cancer from 2003-2006. He is responsible for the Ovarian Cancer Screening programme in Stoke on Trent in collaboration with the West Midlands Regional Clinical Genetics Unit in Birmingham. He is also responsible for the management and monitoring of ‘Molar Pregnancy’ in collaboration with the Sheffield Trophoblastic Disease Centre at Weston Park Hospital. He also works closely with the local Consultant Clinical Oncologists in managing breast cancer patients who would benefit from prophylactic oophorectomy (planned removal of ovaries) to facilitate the treatment of breast cancer and to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer in patients who are gene positive for breast cancer(BRCA1 And BRCA 2). He also manages ‘fertility sparing ‘procedures for the younger cancer patients by liaising with various fertility units in the West Midlands.

He was Clinical Director for 7 years till April 2002. During this time he established clinical governance in the department and set up the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) after securing funding from the Trust for this. He also carried out the first consultant appraisals in 1999. He was also the RCOG tutor from 1988-1990. He secured funding to provide 40 hours of consultant cover for labour ward in 2000. He was a council member of the Birmingham and Midland Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society 1992-1995. He also coordinated 2 reviews for the Cochrane Database. He wrote a chapter on ’Becoming a Clinical Director in Obstetrics and Gynaecology’ in the Year Book of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, RCOG 1999.

He is a clinical teacher for the medical students from Keele Medical school and regularly takes teaching sessions and lectures. Teaching takes place in clinical and non -clinical settings. He is an examiner for the medical students at Keele University and for the Part 2 MRCOG exam organised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He has published 17 papers in recognised peer reviewed journals and his MD thesis is available in the University of Birmingham library.

He is also an avid though average golfer playing off a handicap of 14. He is a Director on the Management Board of Trentham Golf Club in Staffordshire and was the Captain of this club from 2011 to 2012.
